It may seem counterintuitive to cleanse your skin with oil, but this age-old method of cleansing is actually one of the best ways to support clear, healthy + balanced skin. Whether you have sensitive, combination, dry, aging, or even acne-prone skin, the Oil Cleansing Method can help to significantly improve the health of your skin.
Cleansing oils utilize skin-loving oils to deeply purify pores + nourish the skin while keeping its natural moisture barrier in-tact. Plus, it’s incredibly restorative + relaxing (the perfect way to wind down from a busy day). From the aromatherapy benefits of pure essential oils, the stress-relieving + tension-melting facial massage and the warmth from the hot washcloth, oil cleansing = a little bit of heaven.
But because the OCM works a bit differently than your conventional foaming or cream cleansers, we’re sharing helpful tips on how to oil cleanse, getting the most benefit from your cleansing routine, and navigating this new way of washing your face.
Watch our tutorial below to learn exactly how to oil cleanse and to create a glowing complexion – no matter your skin type!
Curious about which Cleansing Oil is best for your skin type? To find out which would be the best option for you, here are a couple tips we suggest when determining your specific skin type:
Oil-rich: Your skin is more prone to acne, tends to produce excess oil and pore size is visibly larger on forehead, nose, chin and cheeks.
- Our Oily Cleansing Oil is specifically formulated for oily skin to detoxify + dissolve impurities without drying it out and forcing the skin to over-produce oil/sebum (which can lead to a vicious cycle of ongoing breakouts).
Normal: Your skin is more balanced or combination (areas more prone to producing oil along with drier patches) with more visible pores around the nose or forehead/chin.
- Our Normal Cleansing Oil is specifically formulated to detoxify the skin and dissolve impurities without over-drying so that you’re left with a complexion that feels soft, clean and balanced.
Dry: Your skin tends to feel more tight, dry, sensitive or with signs of aging along with less visible pores all over the face.
- Our Dry Cleansing Oil is specifically formulated with a blend of age-defying oils known to detoxify the skin + dissolve impurities without over-drying so that you’re left with a complexion that feels soft, clean and nourished.

I am 45 years old and have been using your chronic for about a month now. I absolutely love it.
Can I use this cleansing oil to remove my eye make up as well? And do you have any tips for that?
Cleansing oil! NOT chronically. Lol. Should have re read before posting
🙂
Hi Celine! We’re so happy to hear you’ve been loving your Primally Pure products, thank you for sharing. 🙂 We typically suggest using our Baby Oil as an eye makeup remover as it doesn’t contain any essential oils and is incredibly gentle around the delicate eye area. However, if you feel your eye area does well with essential oils, the Cleansing Oil is a great option to remove makeup. We suggest applying a small amount of Baby Oil or Cleansing Oil to an organic cotton round and gently sweeping across your lids + lashes until your makeup is completely removed. Follow up with a full facial cleanse with the Cleansing Oil and then finish your skincare routine with Everything Spray/Complexion and Beauty Cream! Hope those tips are helpful, XO
Does using warm water open pores? I want to make sure I don’t lose my nice tight pores. Should I follow up with a cold cloth?
Hi Rach! The warm water with the Oil Cleansing Method does help to open pores in order to pull out impurities and detoxify the skin. We suggest using a toner like our Everything Spray or Complexion Mist to replenish and tone skin after cleansing. A splash of cold water can always help too. 🙂 XO
I am an Asian, I want to know whether these oil cleansers would suit my skin also …..
Hi Shihara! Definitely 🙂 Cleansing Oils are suitable for all skin types – no matter your skin type or ethnicity. They’re specifically formulated to deeply cleanse, remove makeup + buildup and balance oil production all without overdrying. We hope you’ll give the OCM a try + let us know what you think! XO
I’ve been using the normal cleansing oil and everything spray for about a week now and I love it so far. However, my skin feels kind of dry. Should I try a moisturizer as well? Or is this just because my skin is getting used to this new way of cleansing?
Hi Amy! We’re so excited you’ve been incorporating the Oil Cleansing Method into your skincare routine 🙂 Since you’re currently using a cleanser and a toner and are feeling like your skin is still dry, we definitely recommend adding in a Skin-Specific Serum or Beauty Cream! We typically suggest a 3-step skincare routine: cleanse, tone, hydrate. Try adding in a serum/moisturizer morning and night and see how your skin responds! XO
