As an oily-skinned and acne-prone teenager, I grew up thinking that harsh = better when it came to cleansers. I would buy and try every cleanser that promised to strip away oil (completely opposite of the oil cleansing method) and, as a result, get rid of pimples and blemishes.
Unfortunately, these cleansers never seemed to work like the commercials on TV promised. My skin would always feel super dry after a wash, but soon afterwards it would be overcome with unnatural amounts of oil/grease.
It wasn’t until much later that I learned why. By drying my skin out with harsh cleansers, I forced it to over-produce oil in order to compensate for the dryness (so simple, yet so contrary to everything conventional wisdom tells us about skincare)! My skin’s natural moisture barrier was completely out of whack and had been for years — even though I THOUGHT I was doing everything right.
What is the Oil Cleansing Method?
Once I discovered the oil cleansing method, it immediately resonated with me. Based on the scientific principle that like dissolves like, oil cleansing utilizes beneficial oils that penetrate deep into pores to dissolve grime and build-up. It’s the best way to purify + nourish the skin (natural oils are SO powerful in their ability to beautify and heal) while still keeping its natural moisture barrier in-tact. Oil cleansing works for all skin types when the correct oil ratios/types of oils are being used.
After the initial adjustment period during which my skin purged itself of toxins it released in the form of blemishes (this lasted for about a week), I finally felt like my skin had balanced itself out! I was no longer going through a pack of oil-blotting sheets every 2 weeks (not kidding) and the acne I had struggled with for YEARS was finally starting to clear up.
This was undoubtedly the most beneficial topical skincare adjustment I had ever made (and I had tried just about everything at that point)!
Since the oil cleansing method is so different from “normal” cleansing, I thought it would be helpful to provide some additional info on how it works. Below you’ll find my variation of the oil cleansing method along with a few extra tid-bits of advice which should help to make your transition to the oil cleansing method as easy and painless as possible!
Oil Cleansing — 5 Easy Steps
- Step #1: Remove Makeup — I recommend using this organic oil or our Baby Oil for this part! Just rub into the skin until face/eye makeup has dissolved and gently wipe away with a warm, wet washcloth. . Let your skin dry off completely before moving on to the next step.
- Step #2: Apply a quarter-sized dollop of cleansing oil to your hands, and massage into DRY skin using your fingertips. Do this for about 60 seconds. This is when the cleansing oil really works its magic, dissolving build-up and nourishing the skin with powerful plant nutrients. Try to also think of this as a time to relax and massage away the stresses of the day — like a mini at-home spa treatment!
- Step #3: Wet a clean washcloth with warm water and place it onto face until the washcloth cools. Use a different washcloth than the one you used to wipe off your makeup – we love this set of organic cotton washcloths (make sure it isn’t TOO warm for your delicate facial skin).
- Step #4: Gently wipe away impurities + excess oil with washcloth. No need to scrub too aggressively here — a few gentle sweeps of the face will do the trick!
- Step #5: Repeat process if necessary (this usually isn’t necessary UNLESS you skip step #1 and need an extra cleanse to remove makeup + grime).
Troubleshooting
Pretty simple, right? I tend to think so! But as is the case with any new habit, it does take some time to master. To help clear things up, here are the answers to a few additional questions I often get asked about oil cleansing.
Q: How often and which time of day do you recommend oil cleansing?
A: Once per day, every day, in the evening. But since this method does provide a very DEEP clean, some may prefer to only implement the oil cleansing method every other day or even once a week. Evening is the best time to cleanse in order to remove impurities that build up throughout the day. Cleansing in the morning (with oil or anything else) is usually NOT necessary, as our skin undergoes its own cleansing/detoxification process at night when we sleep! Simply rinsing with water is all your complexion needs in the morning.
Q: Can I continue to use other skincare products, get facials, etc. in combination with oil cleansing?
A: It depends. Some products/treatments can severely dry out (or even damage) the skin and counteract the balancing effects of oil cleansing. For best results, I recommend only using natural skincare products/makeup/skin treatments in conjunction with oil cleansing.
Q: What should I use on my skin after oil cleansing?
A: For some, oil cleansing alone is enough to keep the skin hydrated, balanced and moisturized. Others may want to use something like Fancy Face Serum, Complexion Mist or a natural moisturizer/cream (pure tallow or shea butter are great options) for an additional nutrient or moisture boost! I usually follow up oil cleansing with a few spritzes of Everything Spray to tone + balance out my skin’s PH and finish things off with a few drops of Fancy Face Serum to give help even out my skin tone, heal scars and prevent/diminish wrinkles.
Q: I’m using the correct oil for my skin type, but my skin feels more [oily or dry] than it should. What gives?
A: Our blends are based on copious amounts of research + trial and error to figure out which types/ratios of oils are best for any given skin type. The blend that will work best for you will depend on your skin type (oily, normal, dry) in addition to the climate in which you live. For instance, someone with oily skin who lives in Phoenix, AZ may be better off using the normal blend or even the dry blend. In contrast, someone who lives on the coast in Florida and generally has dry skin may be better off using the normal blend. It all depends on what works best for you and YOUR skin, and there may be additional factors that play a part in choosing the blend that will suit you best.

HI! I’m on week 2 of your cleansing oil (along with deodorant, body butter and lip balm), and I absolutely LOVE how it makes my skin feel afterwards!! I did have a question after reading through your Q&A’s…can you recommend a good natural makeup line? Thanks!! LOVE LOVE LOVE your products!!
Hi Stef! SO glad you’re enjoying our products!! I have a few natural makeup favs, including Lily Lolo mascara, Au Naturale Lipsticks/glosses, Elate Cosmetics pressed powder, Elate Cosmetics bronzer, and BeautyCounter Tint Skin foundation. I hope that helps! 🙂 Organic Bunny (theorganicbunny.com) also has tons of great recommendations!
I do a lot of exercise so I shower a lot, plus I wear eye makeup for work. I currently take it off with a makeup wipe and then cleanse in the shower, would I need to use the cleansing oil after my shower?
I usually massage the cleansing oil into my skin prior to getting in the shower and then wipe it off with a wet, warm washcloth while in the shower. I wouldn’t use it in addition to another cleanser as that might over dry the skin. Does that help? 🙂
How do you keep washcloths free from makeup stains and mascara stains? I do so much better with washcloths because the damp cotton pads irritate my skin
Just posted a reply to your previous comment! 🙂
Hi Bethany! I’m looking to completely revamp my beauty routine with several of your products. One of your products that caught my eye is your fancy face serum as I’ve been battling perioral dermatitis; however, I’m allergic to pumpkin! I know this is asking A LOT, but would you ever be able to replace that ingredient with something else or omit the pumpkin seed oil as a second option for someone like me? I totally understand if you cannot do that! If you cannot, do you have any other recommendations for a similar product? Thank you so much!
In Health,
Megan
Hi Megan! I SO wish we could do this for you, but unfortunately we aren’t able to accommodate such a specific request at this time. :/ I would check out Primal Life Organics as they have a variety of face serums and most likely have one without pumpkin seed oil!
Thanks for the awesome and informative post, Bethany! I’ve been using your deodorant, lip balm and body butter for about a year and your Fancy Face Serum and body oil since Christmas – I love it all and am super interested in trying oil cleansing for my face. Thanks again! 😀
That’s wonderful, Alissa! So happy you’re liking our products. I think you’ll love the cleansing oil as well!
Since you recommend the oils cleansing once a day, like I’m the evening. I wake up in the morning and wash my face, then go to the gym and I have to wash my face again. My question do you have another cleanser I could use 3 times a day. Before the gym, after the gym and at night time. Also do you have to always use a wash cloth to take away or could it be just water. I would have to wash lots of washcloths if I do this everyday lol. Thanks!!
I was wanting to know the same things??
Hi Julie! Just left a response below 🙂 Thanks! XO
Hi Alejandra! The Oil Cleansing Method works so efficiently to deeply cleanse the skin and remove makeup + dirt from the day, so we recommend using the right Cleansing Oil for your skin type just once day before bed. Using it again the morning is not necessary and may be too much for certain skin types – so we suggest splashing the skin with warm water in the morning and following with our Complexion Mist or Everything Spray to refresh + replenish. After your workout, our Baby Bar is a super gentle cleansing bar that will help to keep skin cleansed and nourished after a sweat session. So your three cleansers for the day: water (am), Baby Bar (post-workout) and Cleansing Oil (pm). Hope that’s helpful! XO
Hi Bethany,
I absolutely love your products. I’ve been using the Fancy Face Serum, the Complexion Mist, the Everything Mist and the Outdoor Lotion. It has cleared my skin and it has made it happy.
However, my face recently started breaking out into little bumps all over my face, especially my forehead which hardly ever gets pimples. I am not sure if it is the medicine I am taking for shingles because it started occuring a few days from the time I started taking the medicine. Now I am off it, but I still take a nerve pain reliever 3x a day. The bumps are still there but the red painful flare ups are calming yet I am getting a bunch of little whiteheads near my chin and jaw line area.
I have a history with acne and it has given me little scars all over my face. Now with the little bumps, I am so embarrassed of my face, not to mention it becomes an oil pan within a couple hours of washing. I recently purchased the Oil Cleanser for Oily Skin and I live near the beach in Southern California. Do you think the PH balance is suitable for me and the climate I live in?
I’ve done a lot of research about oil cleansing and when it became available on your site, I thought it was a sign to try. I just have one fear, I am terrified of the purging process. Do you know if the oil cleanser will get rid of the tiny bumps all over my face? Also, as soon as I come home from work, I like to wash my face then workout. Do you have a regimen to recommend? Do I oil cleanse then workout? Or could I use dove soap (mild soup), then workout and then do the oil cleansing right before I step in the shower? I have had some issues in the past with removing makeup with coconut oil, and it broke me out in the worst case of cystic acne. Plus I don’t believe removing my makeup with oil right before I work out is a good idea. What do you think? Is there a mild cleanser that could help until I oil cleanse my face for the evening?
I appreciate your business and expertise. Thank you for your tips and tricks. I know your products have revolutized my skin journey. Thank YOU for your help.
Hi Katy! Thanks so much for sharing about your experience – I’m sorry it’s taking so many months to respond and hope since then you’ve found a solution for your skin. Acne is an in depth skin condition that truly takes a holistic approach to heal (check out our blog post series, How To Get Rid Of Acne!)
In regards to the OCM, we recommend using a Cleansing Oil after your workout and before bed to remove build up + dirt from the day. Our Cleansing Oils don’t contain coconut oil (so no worries there!) but do include a blend of deeply nourishing oils that leave your skin feeling cleansed and balanced.
We’ve recently launched a baby line and the Baby Bar is a gentle, yet effective cleansing bar that would be perfect pre-workout if you like to wash your face after work and before hitting the gym. It doesn’t strip your skin but will help to remove makeup and leave your skin refreshed before you sweat.
We are SO grateful to hear how impactful PP products have been for you and we hope you continue to experience radiant skin + happy self! Thanks, Katy! XO
Hi Bethany,
I started using your oil cleanser and love it. I’ve always had very oily skin, and have used harsh cleansers like you, which exacerbated everything. My skin is adjusting nicely! I have the same question as a woman above. After the gym, do you only use a warm washcloth if it’s not time to cleanse yet?
Thank you for making your wonderful products!
Lisa
Hi Lisa! Thanks so much for your kind words 🙂 After a workout, our Baby Bar would be a gentle, yet effective option to cleanse skin post-workout, keeping skin clear of sweat and build up that could lead to breakouts. Then, before bed you can do your Oil Cleansing Ritual for a full deep cleanse. Hope that is helpful! XO
Would oil cleansing also work for pre-teen daughter? I love all the primally pure products to date I have purchased – especially the aluminum free deo! Now thinking about the oil cleansing for my daughter.
Hi Lori! Absolutely! Especially as pre-teen skin can begin producing even more oil, the OCM will be an effective option to help keep her skin nourished and balanced – rather than stripping the skin as conventional cleansers at the drugstore will do. Another option would be to cleanse with our Baby Bar. It’s a gentle, yet effective cleanser for adults (and pre-teens!) with sensitive skin. Again, your daughter will only want to use the Cleansing Oil before bed and in the morning can splash her skin with warm water! XO
I was reading about your products, and your face serum has 17 ingredients in this one bottle. How can the pumpkin oil, carrot oil or any of these oils be any benefit to the skin with so many ingredients. The percentage of each one of these oils have to be low since there is so many (17) I like to add rose hip oil to my serums or cream in my dry areas, that means 18 ingredients. These oil can’t have a high percentage, with so many mic all in one. I might try your beauty cream since it has only 5 ingredients, the percentage has to be a higher rating. Is this beauty cream good for combination skin, and I also have clogged pores. Will this clog my pores?
Hi Stephanie, thanks for sharing! We understand your concern (we absolutely agree with the concept, less is more!) but because the essential oils we include are such high quality and quite potent, even with one drop applied to the skin it has immense benefits. And while there are 17 different ingredients, they are all 100% pure, organic oils rather than only a few natural ingredients being covered up with chemicals or fillers. But don’t just take our word for it – we’d encourage you to take a look at the reviews on the Fancy Face Serum product page to hear what other customers have experienced when using it! In regards to the Beauty Cream, those 5 ingredients we’ve chosen to include work in harmony with the biology of the skin. Rather than sitting on top of the skin or clogging pores, it deeply absorbs to truly transform the health + appearance of your skin. If you do feel the texture is too rich, you can add a bit of water or even complexion mist to make it feel a little lighter. Hope this is helpful, we hope you enjoy! XO
Hi!! I’m looking to start your products but I’m not really sure which oil I should get. Would you be able to recommend one for me? I live in the state of Maine (on the coast) so it goes from very cold to very humid here. My skin is typically pretty middle ground as far as oily/dry goes, but I have some acne looking scars on my cheeks that I never can get rid of.
Thanks!!
🙂
Hi Makaila! It sounds like our Normal/Combo Cleansing Oil would be the best option as your skin tends to be a bit in-between dry and oil-rich. After cleansing, our Everything Spray or Rose + Mint Complexion Mist would be a perfect follow up to help to continue to balance and tone your skin. To help the healing process of your acne scars and to even skin tone, our Fancy Face Serum works wonders! 🙂 XO
Hi! My name is Alexandria and I’m a big fan of all natural skin care products! In fact, I’ve been searching for a great one in a long time! Now that I’ve found it I need your help! I’m looking for a skincare routine to suit my normal to oily (I guess you could say combination towards the oily side) type skin! I was thinking of the cleansing oil, complexion mist , fancy face serum then beauty cream for my nightly routine since am isn’t needed but I’m not sure if my routine has too much or not. I have visible pores that I would like to see reduced, moderately combination skin type that I just want to keep clear and glowing (I don’t have acne prone skin) , and I’m approaching 21 this month so I’m simply just wanting a good skin routine I can invest in, any recommendations of the types of these products to get for my skin type would greatly be appreciated. I really hope you can help. Thank you!
Hi Alexandria! We’re so excited to hear you’re making the switch to safer skincare and the routine you mentioned for the evening sounds perfect. In the morning, you can simplify your routine to splashing your face with warm water and spritzing Complexion Mist (or Everything Spray) and if you feel you still need a bit more hydration you can apply a couple drops of Fancy Face to finish 🙂 XO
Hello. What products would you recommend for Seborrheic Dermatitis? I have numerous spots on my face, mostly on my cheeks and forehead. I live in Iowa, where currently the weather is very humid, but during the winter the air gets very dry.
Thank you!
Hi Tara! With sensitive + irritated skin, we highly suggest products from our Baby Line! With incredibly pure, simple ingredients they help to heal and soothe several skin conditions. You can try cleansing with the Baby Bar which is a gentle, effective cleanser and moisturize with the Baby Balm which is infused with calendula and marshmallow root which help to calm and care for even the most sensitive skin. Hope you find that to be helpful! XO
hi there! I’ve recently switched to oil cleansing and it’s been absolutely incredible. one question about what to use afterwards – if my skin is feeling dry post cleansing before bed and I don’t have the fancy face serum, where does the beauty cream fit in? can I use that on my face after the cleansing oil and complexion mist? thanks so much!
Hi Kelsey! We’re so happy to hear you’ve been trying out the OCM. After cleansing and the Complexion Mist you can definitely finish with the Beauty Cream for deep nourishment and hydration. A little bit goes a long way and if you can also add a bit of water to create a thinner consistency. Hope that is helpful, enjoy! XO
Hey Bethany!
I’m noticing your suggesting either/or for the complexion mist and everything spray but is there any way we could use both? Or would just one of the two do the same effect?
I’m interested in getting the baby bar and either the mist or spray for my morning routine and then using beauty cream but I don’t know if that would be too much moisture in the am ? then for night I was going to get the cleansing oil and either mist/spray (whichever is recommended) then finish with fancy face serum. Then as a body routine I was thinking of using the baby bar, body butter and natural deodorant but I didn’t know if I should incorporate the body oil into that for dewy glow results or if the cream is enough by itself..
I’m so confused and I’m not even sure what to do or use but I am in my 20s, I have combination skin, and I’m seeking a skincare regime I can stick with and that is effective! Please feel free to add or take out anything I’ve suggested because I honestly don’t know what to purchase, I desperately need your advice for my am pm routine for my skin to achieve healthy skin overall. Body products would be helpful also. I just want to start my natural skin journey completely ready. Thanks in advance, I’m a huge fan!
Also which mist would you recommend?
Hi Josie! We are SO excited to help you on your healthy skin journey + love that you’re committing to a skincare routine in your 20’s 🙂 We know there are several options, but want to help you simplify and find the best PP products for you.
PM: With combination skin (oil-rich areas + dry patches) we definitely suggest starting your evening routine with our Normal Cleansing Oil – it’s the perfect blend of oils to deeply cleanse while leaving dry skin nourished and oil-rich areas balanced. In regards to the Everything Spray or the Complexion Mist, I actually use and love both for my combination skin! I typically will use the Everything Spray at night after the OCM as a toning treatment (it works wonders at keeping my skin clear and smooth) and finish with with the Fancy Face Serum or the Beauty Cream (it really just depends on how your skin is feeling and how much moisture you feel you need!). 3 simple steps + products for a night time routine!
AM: In the morning we suggest simply splashing your face with warm water – unless you like cleansing first thing, feel free to use our Baby Bar (with goat milk it even has gentle exfoliation properties). It would definitely be too much to do the OCM both am/pm so stick to Oil Cleansing only once a day. Following either water or Baby Bar, that’s when I love spritzing the Complexion Mist – we actually just launched 2 brand new scents and we are loving the Geranium! But really, you cannot go wrong with any of them 🙂 The Complexion Mist is a great morning boost of hydration and nourishment and preps the skin for Fancy Face or Beauty Cream. Beauty Cream is best applied to damp skin so spritzing a mist beforehand is best.
BODY: For your body – it’s honestly ALL amazing 🙂 Using the Baby Bar in the shower is a brilliant idea and we typically switch between the Body Butter (Almond + Vanilla is heavenly!) and our luxurious Body Oils. We also offer the collections so you can try out each scent in smaller sizes before buying a bigger bottle!
We hope this is helpful for you, Josie! Please feel free to reach back out if you have any further questions. Enjoy! XO, Courtney
Hi! Just started using the oil cleansing method and I’m wondering if you can tell me roughly how many drops to use? I know it says quarter size but I’m not good at eye balling! Just want to make sure I’m using enough/not too much.
Thanks!
Hi Katie! We’re so excited you’ve begun oil cleansing – we know your skin is going to love it! I typically will use about 2-3 droppers full, but there really is no right or wrong amount. Once you start oil cleansing more often, you’ll be able to feel how much product feels good for your skin and will be most effective in removing makeup, dirt and debris. Enjoy! XO
Hi! I want to being by saying thank you to the Primally Pure team for all your help and guidance with your products! I absolutely love the products I’ve used thus far (Beauty Cream, Fancy Face Serum) and would love to incorporate the fancy face serum into my routine, too! For a makeup remover before cleansing, do you have a recommendation for which brand of Jojoba Oil? Also, I love your suggestion of using the Baby Bar before/after workouts. After cleansing with the baby bar midday, would you top it off with the Complexion Mist and/ore Beauty Cream again, or is the Baby Bar good by itself before putting makeup on again?
Thank you all so much! LOVE your products!
Hi Rachel! Thank you so much for sharing your positive feedback about PP with us 🙂 We’d love to help answer some of your skincare questions. Before cleansing we actually love using our Baby Oil – it effectively removes makeup and is gentle for the delicate eye area as there are no essential oils in the product. In regards to jojoba oil, there isn’t necessarily a specific brand we suggest, just be sure it’s organic!
After cleansing with the Baby Bar, we definitely recommend applying a few sprays of Complexion Mist to replenish the skin. If you feel you need even a bit more moisture after cleansing, you can apply a small amount of Beauty Cream or Fancy Face Serum. Let the product absorb into the skin before applying makeup for the best application.
Hope that’s helpful, please reach out if you have any further questions! XO
Hi Bethany,
I have been using the oil cleansing for a few weeks not continously. My face gets red and a bit warm. Is this ok, what should i do?
Julie Stouse
Hi Julie! There typically is a bit of a transitional period when switching to the Oil Cleansing Method. While your skin is getting used to this new way of cleansing, spritzing your skin with a soothing Complexion Mist or sweeping our calming Everything Spray across your skin with an organic cotton pad after cleansing can be helpful to replenish + soothe the skin. If after several weeks you feel like your skin still has not adjusted, it could be that your skin has a sensitivity to a specific essential oil. In that case, our Baby Bar is a gentle, effective cleansing bar formulated without any essential oils. Please keep us posted + we hope that’s helpful! XO
Hi there, I am curious how a routine would go if you shower at night. Would you do everything before getting in the shower? Or after?
Hi Maggie, great question! We would typically suggest doing your full skincare routine after your shower (so you don’t wash away your freshly applied serum + moisturizer). But if you prefer to cleanse your skin before showering, you could oil cleanse, shower, and then apply your toner, serum + moisturizer. Hope that’s helpful! XO
Hi there, I am wanting to buy some products from your skincare but I do not know what to buy. I want a cleanser and a moisturizer. I have dry skin and live in TN. I was curious about the blue tansy cream. Is this a moisturizer? I have tried almost everything on my skin and I break out easily. I am allergic to metals and fragrances. I bought the charcoal deodorant and it is working very well.
Hi Tiffani! Thanks so much for your interest in our natural skincare line + we’re SO happy to hear you’ve been loving our Charcoal Deodorant 🙂 If you tend to have sensitive skin, we typically suggest our Baby Bar for a gentle, daily cleanser – you could also give the Oil Cleansing Method a try a few nights a week with our Normal Cleansing Oil (we have several OCM posts on our blog for more info!).
Yes! Our Blue Tansy Beauty Cream is an effective moisturizer for sensitive or inflammed skin in need of healing + hydration. It’s only scented with essential oils (we refuse to use any artificial fragrances in our products) and only contains 5 ingredients to help soothe + calm the skin. We hope you’ll give these a try and if you have any further questions feel free to reach out to hello@primallypure.com. XO
I am super interested in starting a new skincare cleansing and treatment line! Primally pure sounds amazing. Do u offer discount/ coupon codes for new customers? I also have dark spots / melasma and wantedbto see if u have any specific products that can help w that. Fading / brightening skin. Thanks!
Hi Kate! We’re so grateful for your interest in Primally Pure and excited for you to get started on a new, non-toxic skincare routine. We currently do not have any coupons or discount codes available but feel free to sign up for our newsletter to be the first to find out when we do! You can sign up here: https://primallypure.com/pages/newsletter-signup
In regards to discoloration + skin brightening, we’ve had several customers have great success with our Fancy Face Serum! It’s a blend of 17 potent + powerful essential oils, rich in Vitamins A and C – which both help to even skin tone and stimulate cell renewal within in the skin. It definitely has a more earthy, spicy scent due to the oils it contains and we suggest using this serum after cleansing with our Baby Bar (gentle exfoliating properties from the goat milk) and toning with our Geranium Complexion Mist (rejuvenates skin).
If you have any other questions feel free to reach out to hello@primallypure.com and we’d love to support your skincare journey further! XO
What do you recommend for combo skin – oily in the t-zone
Hi Sarah! For combination skin we would suggest using our Normal Cleansing Oil. It’s made with a blend of oils known to detoxify the skin and dissolve impurities without over-drying so that you’re left with a complexion that feels soft, clean and balanced. And after cleansing to complete your skincare routine, we suggest our Everything Spray and/or Complexion Mist and Beauty Cream. Hope you enjoy! XO
Ok. I love your everything spray and deordorant. But I’m TERRIFIED to try this. I have done oil cleansing before. Twice. Both times I did copious amounts of research to figure out which oil combo would work best for my skin. Then I purchased high quality oils from a local retailer (mountain rose herbs) and mixed up my own cleansing oil. Never went through a detox period. But then at the 8 week mark my skin went bananas and I broke out in horrible, painful, cystic acne. I pushed through for an extra 6 week but it only got worse, so I discontinued. It took about a year to get my skin to clear up. A couple years later I decided to give it a second go with different oils. And the EXACT same thing happened at the 8 week mark. And then the second year long struggle to clear up my skin again. I used jojoba oil, hemp oil, hazelnut oil, sweet almond oil, and borage seed oil in different combinations in my cleansing. I really want to try again, but understabdly, I’m so afraid to now that my skin has been clear again for the last 18 months or so. Any advice?? Maybe OCM just isn’t right for me?
Hi Amber! Thanks so much for sharing your OCM experiences with us – we completely understand your hesitation after all your skin has been through! It’s so tough to say exactly what caused your skin to react the way it did – it could be one specific oil in the combination or the technique in general. You could always try our Double Cleansing Method (we have a video tutorial on our blog) which includes a second cleanse with our goat milk Baby Bar after oil cleansing to ensure an even more effective cleanse – plus, our Baby Bar is incredibly gentle with soothing herbs. Or you can simply cleanse with the Baby Bar for a non-toxic, natural cleanser 🙂 We’d love to encourage you try again, but we understand one skincare routine doesn’t fit all skin types. Please keep us posted with what you decide and how it goes! You can always reach out to hello@primallypure.com XO
I noticed you guys changed your cleanse up a bit and added a double cleanse (using your baby bar soap) I like using this original oil Cleanse protocol. . Should I start double cleansing with the bar? Is the double cleanse a better cleanse? Or can I keep to the ORiginal protocol as stated above? Thank you
Hi Ruth! We’ve been educating our community a bit more on the Double Cleansing Technique for an even more complete cleansing routine. But of course, the OCM is an incredibly effective way to provide a deep cleanse for the skin! If you feel that just using the Cleansing Oil is working well with your skin, then stick with it! If you’re wanting to switch things up a bit or based on the season/state of your skin, you can always incoporate our Baby Bar after the Cleansing Oil. If you do decide to try Double Cleansing, let us know what you think! We just posted a video tutorial on our blog 🙂 Sometimes I’ll even switch up my evening cleansing routine with just the OCM most nights and then Double Cleansing a couple times a week. Hope that’s helpful! XO
When doing the oil cleanse to take off makeup, how do you keep your washclpths from staining from mascara and s i like touse wash cloths only because i have tried damp cotton balls but ghey are a bit rough on my skin
Hi Andrea! Before oil cleansing your full face, we suggest removing your eye makeup + mascara first! Start your evening skincare routine by applying a small amount of Baby Oil or Cleansing Oil to an organic cotton round and gently sweeping across your lids + lashes until your makeup is completely removed. Follow up with a full facial cleanse with the Cleansing Oil and then finish your skincare routine with Everything Spray/Complexion and Beauty Cream! Hope those tips are helpful, XO
Hi. Thank you for this site; very informative and helpful. My email is not working; hopefully, this venue works.
Hi Deborah! Thank you for your kind feedback, we’re grateful you found this post to be so helpful!
